Getting started · Lesson 3 of 5

The canvas: source, steps, output

Every rule reads left to right: where the data comes from, what changes, and where it goes. Here's how to add a step and pick an output.

The comic

  1. Panel 1 of 4.

    On the canvas

Murphy says: Think of the canvas as a conveyor belt: first your source, then your steps, then the output. Data travels along it from one to the next.
  2. Panel 2 of 4.
Murphy says: To change something, click the dashed “+” box. “Add Transformation” lets you pick a step, such as “Constant”, “Computed”, “Extract Text”, “Transform” or “Lookup”.
  3. Panel 3 of 4.
Murphy says: On the output, choose a “Format” (CSV or JSON) and a “Destination”: “Download”, Google Drive, an email, an SFTP server (a secure file server), or straight into a system like Xero.
  4. Panel 4 of 4.
Murphy says: Press “Save” as you go. The pill at the top says “Inactive” until you switch it on. An “Active” rule also runs on its triggers and schedule.

Email and SFTP delivery are on the Pro plan and above.

Quick check

1. Where do you choose where the data goes?
2. What does an “Active” rule do that an “Inactive” one doesn't?
