Cleaning and mapping · Lesson 2 of 4

Lookups: bring in data from elsewhere

Match your rows against another file or system and pull in the fields you're missing.

The comic

  1. Panel 1 of 4.

    Missing pieces

Murphy says: Your orders have customer IDs, but you need their names, and those live somewhere else. That's a job for a lookup!
  2. Panel 2 of 4.
Murphy says: After the dashed “+”, choose “Lookup”. Pick a “Lookup Source”: a CSV file, or “Integration” for a connected system's records, or a file in Google Drive or OneDrive.
  3. Panel 3 of 4.
Murphy says: In “Configure Join”, pair a field in your data with one in the lookup, like Customer ID with Contact ID. Then pick the fields to bring in.
  4. Panel 4 of 4.

    No match?

Murphy says: A “Left Join” keeps every row. When there's no match, you choose: leave the fields blank, use a default value, or fail the row and report an error.

A lookup file you upload has to be uploaded again each time you play the rule. For scheduled runs, look up from a connected system or a Drive file instead.
