Cleaning and mapping · Lesson 1 of 4

Clean it up: transformations

Fix dates, trim spaces, find and replace, work out new columns, and drop duplicate rows.

The comic

  1. Panel 1 of 4.

    Tidy-up time

Murphy says: Messy columns? Click the dashed “+” and choose “Transform” to change a field: “Trim whitespace”, “Find and replace”, “Format date”, “Convert to number” and more.
  2. Panel 2 of 4.
Murphy says: “Format date” can work out each value's format for you, then writes them all the same way.
  3. Panel 3 of 4.
Murphy says: Need a new column? “Constant” adds a fixed value. “Computed” works one out: add numbers, join fields, or “If/Then condition”. “Extract Text” pulls out part of a field.
  4. Panel 4 of 4.
Murphy says: Then tidy the output. “Fields” picks and renames columns, “Filter” keeps only the rows you want, and “Distinct” drops duplicate rows.
