Connecting systems · Lesson 3 of 5

Only what's changed: since last run

Stop re-reading every record on every run. Read only what's been added or changed since the last successful run.

The comic

  1. Panel 1 of 4.

    The problem

Murphy says: Reading every invoice, every day, gets slow, and you'd keep sending the same records again and again.
  2. Panel 2 of 4.
Murphy says: On a system source, find “Records changed” and choose “Since last run”. The first run brings everything. After that, only what was added or changed since the last successful run.
  3. Panel 3 of 4.
Murphy says: Morph remembers when each successful run started, and looks back an extra minute to be safe. If a run fails, the next one picks up from the same place.
  4. Panel 4 of 4.

    Good to know

Murphy says: A run you start by hand moves the mark too, just like the schedule. And deleted records don't show up: there's nothing left to read.

“Since last run” is offered on system sources such as Xero, QuickBooks or HubSpot. Google Drive, SFTP and CashQ sources read their files whole.

Quick check

2 quick questions. No marks, no pressure: pick an answer and Murphy will tell you how you did.

1. You switch on “Since last run”. What does the very first run read?
2. A record was deleted in your system. Will a since-last-run read pick that up?
